HMRC has warned people to be wary of potential scams, having received almost 900,000 reports of people impersonating HMRC and trying to obtain taxpayers’ personal details via bogus calls, text messages and emails.
The most common method involves correspondence related to fake tax refunds, with more than 620,000 complaints about bogus tax rebates. HMRC has sought to reiterate warnings over such scams in the run up to the self-assessment deadline, reminding people that it will never contact customers asking for their PIN, password or bank details.
